The only interview I’ve ever given was in grad school, when IU went to the Final Four and I gave a sloppy drunken quote to the school newspaper who was interviewing at a popular sports bar.

Imagine my surprise years later when I Googled myself and found the quote. I don’t even remember talking to the reporter.

I was interviewed for a local news segment on parietals at Notre Dame. The part they actually included in the final cut?

This is the hard truth for progressive men who care about gender-based inequalities: When you leave the public fight to others, you’re leaving it mostly to women—which, I don’t guess I need to point out to the intelligent and thoughtful men reading this site, is itself a perpetuation of gender-based inequality.

I’ll give you a moment to contemplate the many ways in which treating feminism as “woman’s work” is some fucked-up irony, right there.

Now here’s the other thing about leaving the rectification of gender-based inequalities to the ladies: Misogynist men don’t respect women. They don’t listen to women; they won’t acknowledge a woman’s authority on her own lived experiences; they’re not going to learn anything from women, and certainly not feminist women.

Men who think women are less than need to hear that they’re terribly, infuriatingly, and demonstrably wrong from other men. Publicly. Passionately. As loud as the loud, so very loud, voices on the other side. One of the ways their self-reassuring bullshit works is via the effective void of male dissension, which supports their erroneous belief that they are the “objective” arbiters of womanhood. Well, if we’re so wrong, where are the other people [men] to say so? they wonder smugly.

They count on feminist men never showing up en masse for the main event.

OH MAN, you know what I forgot? It’s getting warm out right now. And you know what that means? Cats are fucking. Those female cats are getting laid, man. Laid so much that this one cat got knocked up by three different catbros WITHIN ONE LITTER. And soon, shelters are gonna be up to their ass in mini-mews. Last year at my shelter was one of the roughest they’ve had, and compounded by the introduction of a trap-neuter-release program for ferals in a nearby park. So we had piles of kittens AND ferals.

So you might be wondering how you can help these purr muffins, and there is a way! For one, you can help out with TNR programs in your town so we don’t have an enormous pile of babies to deal with. But cats are gonna bone and we’re just gonna have to deal with it. In that case, you can look into foster programs in your area and take in a litter to nurture until they’re old enough to adopt out. It’s a fun time, I PROMISE.

But Glenn Beck is saying something else, which might get lost in the translation: Leave Christianity. Again and again in the Gospels, Jesus points to our responsibility to care for the poor, to work on their behalf, to stand with them. In fact, when asked how his followers would be judged, Jesus doesn’t say that it will be based on where you worship, or how you pray, or how often you go to church, or even what political party you believe in. He says something quite different: It depends on how you treat the poor.

In the Gospel of Matthew (Chapter 25) he tells his surprised disciples, that when you are meeting the poor, you are meeting him. They protest: “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

But our responsibility to care for “the least of these” does not end with simple charity. Giving someone some money, or clothes, or shelter, is an important part of the Christian message. But so is advocating for them. It is not enough simply to help the poor, one must address the structures that keep them poor. Standing up for the rights of the poor is not being a Nazi, it’s being a Christian. And a Communist? It’s hard not to think of the retort of the great apostle of social justice, Dom Helder Camara, archbishop of Recife, “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.”
